The Best Time Of Year

I really love to spend time in the woods, and that time is harder to come by as my job requires more paperwork every year. I realized today, that even though everyone complains about winter weather, January is the very best month of the year to go out, walk timber and find out what is there. You have good visibililty, no mosquitoes, no mud, no wet feet crossing creeks, no ticks, no sweat, and no deer flies. The only hard part is pacing over ice like this (see above) without doing a dipsy-doodle. Because we have been well below freezing for many days, I was able to wear my favorite uninsulated, non-waterproof boots, and still had comfy, dry feet after being outside all afternoon. And no bug bites.
