Tuesday Torque: Four Fairbanks Diesels On The U.S.S. Silversides!

The Navy also named a nuclear powered fast attack submarine the Silversides.

During the time the USS Silversides (SSN-679) was homeported in Norfolk, I was doing two weeks of ACDUTRA on the subtender Emory S. Land (AS-39) and was part of the tender's outside repair shop. We worked on the trash disposal unit of the Silversides for a few days. I didn't know that she was the second boat of the same name.

FYI, there is another old WW2 sub located in Manitowac (sp?) Wisconsin, if anyone is interested. It is slightly newer, and also open to self guided tours.
