They required lots of oil and grease. Nothing was enclosed, but the folks who ran them were used to steam engines which also required lots of attention. The drive gears wore thin on engines that covered lots of miles, and if you worked in sandy soils you had to keep the gears dry because oil and grit made an efficient abrasive compound.
Wow. I wonder how much maintenance those old machines tool. The drive belt looks like a weak point.
