We always put marks on the flywheel to aid in knowing where the engine was, timing wise. Made starting a LOT easier. And safer.
We owe the inventors of the electric starter quite a debt. The number of unbroken bones because of the electric starter is surely a very large number. As a former Navy steam propulsion guy, I will state that starting a very large steam turbine is anticlimactic and boring, and that's good!
