Susan raised some mighty fine cabbages in the garden this year and today we made sauerkraut. It's a fun project that we haven't done in many years, and I had to hunt for a suitable kraut rock. It's a 16 pounder, and a beauty! The kraut is tucked away in its crock down in the basement. Susan says she will check it in three days.
Yeah, there wasn't much that came from the grocery store. Grandma also canned meat in lard, plus Anne's veggies. My job was making lye soap, and keeping the cutlery sharp on the foot pedal whetstone. I was really glad when they put in inside plumbing, no more midnight trips in January!!!
My maternal grandmother used to put up 25 to 30 gallons in old stone crocks every year. I sure miss those days.... :(
