Keep It Sharp, Stop And File Often!

Your saw can be cutting fine one minute, and throwing dust the next. Learn how to file so you can touch up your chains. Wear your readers so you can see the edges of the teeth. Wear your leather gloves, and have good light.

Also buy quality chain. My last chain on my Stihl had a very soft metal that dulled easily. It has a Stihl chain back on it now.

I like to clamp my saw bar in a vice, tip toward me, motor end way from me, and use both hands to pull the file instead of push it away from me.
As for chain brands, mostly I use Oregon, the last chain I had on my Husqvarna was a Stihl brand, and It was the first time I ever has a chain that "stretched" to the point that it couldn't be adjusted anymore before wearing out the teeth.

I like to clamp the bar of the saw in my vise, with the bar end pointing towards me, then pull the file towards me instead of pushing it. I seem to have better control of the file that way, instead of trying to hold the saw still with my knees while filing on the ground.

Steadiness and straight file strokes are key! Filing with one hand and holding a camera in the other is not the way to salvation! Pointing the teeth into the sun is a great aid for old eyeballs.
