Put Your Back Into It!

Also, lose your skirt and wear trousers for working around machinery.  Sheesh!  One of the saddest things I have read was from a boy who was on the operator's platform of a steam engine when the boiler let go.  He survived briefly and said, "I was above the trees."  Be careful out there; machinery will bite you.

Back To The Old Grind!  Many Thanks to Merle for spotting!

My school had a small Lister Diesel engine with a similar crank arrangement.

It had a spring-loaded catch that engaged a slot in the crankshaft snout and was supposed to overrun when the engine started.

Having been raised around a bunch of old farmers with mis-shaped - or missing - thumbs, I had a healthy respect (fear?) for hand-cranking engines, and never trusted that Lister.
