When I did the classic car thing, I used to hang out with some Model T guys. They showed me the proper way to crank start those engines. Tuck your thumb in instead of wrapping it around the handle, or you will break your arm if the crank kicks back.

I could not see how those guys were doing it in the video.

Had an old John Deere "B" . 1942 year multi-fuel . When I was young I could throw the flywheel over a couple times with the petcocks opened and fire it up at 30 below zero . Not so much now I'm 70 .

They were wrapping their thumbs around. It gives you a sick feeling watching someone do that. These old tractors have an impulse mechanism that makes the engine fire after top dead center, but when you spin the motor, the impulse may not catch, and then it will hit you.
