Tuesday Torque: Love 'em or Hate 'em?

Maytags hold a unique place in the old engine community. Unlike other old engines, you will hear many disparaging remarks about Maytags.  I am not saying what I think because it is almost like making a political opinion known. Thanks, Merle! We are treading on dangerous ground here!

A Mill Far Away...

...in both time and space. This beautiful bur mill was working at an engine show at Harrodsburg, Kentucky back in 1978 or 1979. Neat fact placing it for us is the Hagen gas engine in the background, just over the belt running the mill. It is a rare Kentucky built engine with a unique carburetion system. It's unmistakable, making for an easy engine identification quiz.

Tuesday Torque: Coolspring Power Museum

Merle picked a Must-See for engine lovers. Coolspring Power Museum is a collection that will overwhelm your senses. There is more history than you can imagine, and you should look up videos online to get a sample, then plan your trip to Pennsylvania. Thanks, Merle!

Tuesday Torque: 10 HP Baveu Engine

Merle found this one on Facebook, and I cannot find it on YouTube at all! This must be an extremely rare breed of engine. It's brief, so look close and fast to pick up the details that we like to see.  Many Thanks, Merle!

Tuesday Torque: Melting Babbit Bearings

Pouring new babbit bearings is a skill that engine hobbyists may learn. It comes in handy, even if you have just one bearing to replace. This is a connecting rod bearing on a really big bearing at Youngstown Steel Heritage, being melted out in preparation for a new bearing to be poured.  Huge thanks to Merle for spotting this one!

Tuesday Torque: Wayback Machine To Boonville, 2009

This video has had just 1000 views since we posted it seventeen years ago. The nickels aren't coming in very fast. It's not a bad video, and there are some good hit-and-miss mechanical views.

That's impressive! Six power strokes per revolution! Thanks, Merle!

Tuesday Torque: SIAM's Second Annual Winter Crank-Up! Evansville, Indiana, March 14

We all were very fortunate. The weather was perfect for this event, and the next day a nasty squall line blew through, bringing dangerous winds and cold temps.

The chili was awesome! It was thick with homegrown, home ground beef, all made from steak!

Tuesday Torque II: Big Bessemer Go-Buggy!

Thanks again, Merle! I would be nervous riding the front end of this contraption!

Tuesday Torque: Cam-Stopper

Merle sent a rare one. Cam Stoppers had a different method of governing the engine speed.  I have heard of them, but have never seen one in the flesh. Thanks, Merle! Even today, engineers are trying to find the perfect engine design.

Tuesday Torque: Nice Old Fairbanks, plus Noisy Fairmont!

This Fairbanks has an interesting layout. The cam operates the ignitor and the fuel pump, and there is also a hand pump built into the assembly for priming the engine. The Fairmont 2-stroke a few locations away was drowning out any conversation!

Tuesday Torque III: Engine Sounds

I get nervous seeing engines revved up when they aren't tied down... I love the sound of the old rotary aircraft engines. It looks like a Curtiss Jenny in the background, and I would love to hear the engine on that one. I have met the De La Vergne engine at Rollag!  Thanks, Merle!

Tuesday Torque II: Steudel Diesel

Merle found a new one for us! I know nothing about Steudels!

Tuesday Torque: Engine Potpourri

 Good One, Merle! Thank You!

Plus, A Bulldog workout!  Note to tractor novices: Do not pull loads drawbar to front end. Hook that chain back to the drawbar on the tractor you are pulling.  Look at tractor disasters on YouTube. Tractors can be pulled in two, and it happens often on the YouTube!
