Weekend Steam Bonus: Steam Shovel Action At Rollag, Minnesota

Some great action we saw at Rollag, Minnesota.

I paused the video and asked my wife to step in and watch a few minutes.
Huge steam shovels were used in the building of the Panama Canal, and they were a mainstay on construction project for a long time.
And then much like the steam railway engine, technology changed and they vanished.

I'm thankful that enthusiasts are keeping them alive, and there is still a small boy inside of me that thinks that playing in the dirt with a really big shovel is awesome.

Operators had a day-long workout on these machines. I know that I'm not tough enough to make it as a machine operator 100 years ago!

Ergonomics wasn't even a blip on the horizon.
