Thinning Again, Plus, Wolf Trees!

We are thinning one of our tree planting projects, and found a nice little lesson to share with you all. The trick to doing your TSI (Timber Stand Improvement) is to always be looking for your good trees. You want them vigorous, well formed, not forked, good branch angles, and a strong crown.

Impressive David to know that you will have left the legacy of a forest. When I started tree planting 35 years ago, I planted only conifers. By the time I thought about trying to plant hardwoods, the deer population had exploded to the point where it became prohibitive and too much of a battle. A lot of my gardening has fallen to the same fate. Unfortunately, due to lack of knowledge at the time and now to various diseases as many of the trees I planted were not native, many of those trees are in distress. But not all. I planted 1000s and have surely left a mark on the landscape here.
My place is an old dairy farm with reverting pasture.
Anyway, you are a man of more fortitude than I as I won't run a chainsaw unless it is under 45 degrees unless I have to.

I also have a soft spot for persimmons.

Once the roots are set, they are a very hard tree to kill.
