Diesels In Death Throes

 There is some dramatic video here! These very likely are due to failure of seals in turbo or superchargers, allowing lubricating oil to be blown into the combustion chambers.

Yep, I'd bet on bad turbo seals. Years ago I worked on minesweepers, that used old engines that had sat in warehouses since the Korean war. Several of them cooked off like that. Imagine the thrill of having 50 gal of burning oil flung onto the deck of a wooden hull ship!
