S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien Triple Expansion Steam Engine

The S.S. Jeremiah O'Brien is one of two Liberty Ships that is still serviceable. 2710 were built during World War II. The ship is fired up once a month and the engine is run for the public to see. Thanks for spotting this great video, Merle!

My Dad worked for a company that scrapped the WWII ships back in the Sixties, mostly the Liberty and Victory ships. I can remember him talking about getting the old engines running to use to power the ships. They found all kinds things on those old ships. Machine guns, swords, knives, lugers. Once he even brought home a small cannon. I was just a kid so I can't remember exactly what happened to all that stuff. I think he just sold it after a while.

Neat video, it made me think of the engine room of the Sand Pebble.

That would be a lot off up and down motion to make an ocean crossing.

There's oil everywhere, and the day when you would pump oily bilge water over the side without a second thought is long gone.

I really appreciate the made in America quality. It is doubtful that the crankshaft could be reproduced today.
