Tuesday Torque: Pony Motor For A Big Bessemer Engine

I am sorta surprised we don't see more gadgets like this one. I know that some oilfield pumpers have contraptions they can use to crank recalcitrant Fairbanks engines, though most of them spin the flywheels the old fashioned way.

Interesting that the pony motor is a gasonline powered friction version of the steam barring engine used to warm up the big steam engine at Kempton Park.

Back in my younger days as a heavy machinery mechanic I worked on a few earth moving machines that used donkey motors for starting. The really big diesels of the day did not start easy and electric starters were not up to the job.
